I sat down with Daddario’s Director of Marketing, Nichole Daddario Swahn, to learn more about the family business.  While Daddario Hardware and Supply has been open since 2009, the Daddario family has been servicing the Franklin community since the 1950s.  Nichole’s great-grandfather started a plumbing, heating, and electrical supply business in a one-room office on Dean Avenue, and by 2006, J.D. Daddario Co., Inc. had grown to be one of the largest distributors in New England with four branches throughout the region.  After selling the family business to Ferguson Enterprises in 2006, Nichole’s dad, Jack Daddario, Jr., tried retirement for a while but still felt the need to serve the Franklin community.  According to Nichole, her family decided that “Franklin needed a smaller type store that had everything that Home Depot or Lowes had but really wanted to focus on customer service.”  In September 2009, Daddario Hardware and Supply opened to fill that need.
Despite its origins, Daddario’s doesn’t just focus on plumbing, heating, and electrical supplies.  As a privately owned franchise of Do It Best, Daddario’s has access to a distribution center with over 60,000 items, so if what you need isn’t in the store, Daddario’s will get it into your hands within two days.  That customer service is what really sets Daddario’s apart from the big box stores; Nichole says that no matter what a customer needs, Daddario’s “won’t let you leave here empty-handed.”   Daddario’s is also planning to expand their offerings beyond hardware this year, including an enlarged paint and housewares section and a line of local grilling sauces and rubs to complement their selection of Weber grills.
Community involvement is another major part of Daddario’s business; “that’s also what makes us stand out. We give back as much as we take,” Nichole says.  The store regularly hosts giveaways, contests, raffles, and customer events, including last year’s Ladies Night.  In what will become an annual tradition, Daddario’s invited local contractors to the store to de-mystify DIY for women, with food and wine provided by local businesses Making Whoopie and Pour Richard’s Wine and Spirits.  Daddario’s also sponsors office and school sports leagues, organizes donations to the Franklin Food Pantry, and even welcomes newcomers to Franklin by sending every new Franklin homeowner a $25 gift card to use as they please in the store.
Although Daddario’s products and service are unbeatable, customers have been known to stop in just for the popcorn, coffee, and a chat with Jack, who knows just about everyone by name.  “That’s what we like and that’s why we stand out because we’re all family.  It’s a family business and we consider everyone our family,” says Nichole.
Daddario’s Hardware and Supply is located at 528 West Central Street in Franklin.  Check out their Facebook page here for up-to-date info on specials, events, and more!
